Coen brings quality interiors to famous pub landmark

Coen is currently working with Bullock Construction and Optima Housing Association, to provide 30 new housing units at the well known Firebird site on Pershore Road in Birmingham. This represents our first project with Optima and we look forward to providing the trademark Coen quality. The homes achieve Level 3 Code for Sustainable Homes compliance and are provided with Solar Panels linked to fee-in tariffs.
The site – The development is being built on a brownfield site on the Benmore estate between Bristol Road and Pershore Road near a major gateway into Birmingham city centre. It was the location of the Firebird Pub, which had remained empty and derelict for a number of years. The site will be developed for affordable housing.

The scheme – A mix of two bedroom apartments, two, three, four and five bedroom family houses. The overall design aims to create a mixture of housing options for social rent, whilst maintaining an attractive outlook for existing residents in the area.

Coen transforms redundant listed school into community homes
Monday, 31 January 2011 00:00

Working on behalf of Bromsgrove District Housing Trust, Coen redeveloped the Redgrove School in Stoke Prior, just outside Bromsgrove. The Victorian listed building was built in 1871 by John Corbett, the owner of the local salt works, and in its day was attended by 500 of his workforce’s children. Each Sunday, for the first seven years of the building’s life, it was also used as a church until the Wychbold Church was built. The school finally closed in 1986.

This development has seen new houses built on the old playground, while the school itself is to be refurbished into 11 two, three and four-bedroom properties. The houses consist of a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes, which feature solar panels on the roof for energy efficiency and environmental considerations.

“Building communities that residents can feel proud of is important to BDHT,” said Mike Brown, chief executive. “The regeneration work in Bromsgrove will be good for those needing new homes, as well as providing jobs for construction workers, who are now working hard to finish the development.”

The development is constructed to the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes Level Three using timber frame construction, all insulated and lined by Coen. Solar panels have been installed on the roof to provide water heating.

Eamon Thompson, New Business Manager, BDHT, said: “We’re very proud of John Corbett Way as it offers local people all the benefits of modern living in an affordable way. We’ve made sure that it is local people who will benefit from this development by giving them first opportunity to rent the homes, which is crucial if we are to help ease the shortage of affordable housing that exists in Stoke Prior and the surrounding Bromsgrove District.

BDHT is a member of the Spectrum Development Partnership, alongside nine other RSLs, which helped the organisation secure funding from the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) and so gave it added clout to beat the credit crunch.

Eight of the properties are available to buy now through under the shared ownership, which allows people to get their foot on the property ladder. Prices start from £70,000 for a 50% share in a two-bedroom house and from £78,250 for a 50% share in a three-bedroom house.
